Behavior of a measure on different shelves

Let’s put some data into excel and import it into Tableau.

T2.1

We will set Year and Month as Discrete Dimensions and Sales as Continuous Measure. Now we will put these fields into different shelves in Tableau.

Year in Columns and Month in Rows forms a crosstab with missing values in the body so Tableau enters Abc instead.

T2.2

When we drag Sales into Rows we will get a mini bar chart for each dimensions value.

T2.3

When a Sales measure is put on a Color shelf then we have this view.

T2.4

On a Size shelf.

T2.5

On a Text shelf.

T2.6

On a Tooltip shelf.

T2.7

On a Detail shelf we see that there is no change to a table besides that the measure values are showing up in a tooltip. As well as when we copy data from the table the measure values will be included.
